Gary Posner was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Already an accomplished pianist as a teenager, he got his start in the music industry working in the Catskills as an accompanist for such luminaries as Barbara Eden, Joel Grey, Mel Brooks, and Chubby Checker, among others.
After college, Gary joined Lobel Production and Recording Studio, as their Lead Recording Engineer and Editor. Lobel Studios specialized in “live to 2-track” and Voice-Over recording. It was the home of the recording ensemble, Philharmonia Virtuosi, a chamber orchestra made up of members of New York’s Philharmonic Orchestra.
He then moved into the recording industry playing on piano on Ziggy Marley's platinum debut record, Conscious Party. He then became a member of Tom Tom Club with former Talking Heads members Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth. Gary played synthesizer, keyboards and percussion on Tom Tom Club’s popular album, “Boom Boom Chi Boom Boom,” as well as their legendary 15-night run at CBGB’s in Manhattan, when Tom Tom Club oversold the club to audiences including Debbie Harry and members of Television and the Ramones. Eventually, Tom Tom Club hit the road, opening for the Grateful Dead and Fine Young Cannibal, as well as sharing a bill with U2 and Keith Richards.
Gary left Tom Tom Club to start an African/Celtic/gospel/rock band called eo, which was signed by Arista Records. His EO bandmates included former members of the Waterboys, They Might Be Giants, and Mambo X.
After eo, Gary began composing music for television and film scores. Television credits include HBO, Cinemax, Court TV, National Geographic, PBS, TruTV, Discovery Channel and The History Channel. Gary’s orchestral score for The History Channel’s highly acclaimed epic documentary Russia: Land of the Tsars was released in May of 2003 as a soundtrack CD and was nominated for a 2004 Emmy award. His score for the film The Quest for King Arthur was released summer of 2004 as a soundtrack. He went on to score the Peabody-Award Winning, Silence of The Bees, Lincoln@Gettysburg, Bush 9/11, Through The Eyes of Dogs and many others.
In 2014, Gary took a break from Film Scoring to teach music in Dakar, Senegal. He is now back in New York and has reopened Whirled Music. He hopes to work with you soon
